Analyzing Data in NVivo 12

1. Start coding by opening a file and turning on the coding stripes. Open a file by double-clicking the file name.

2. On the Document Tools Ribbon, in the View group, click Coding Stripes and All Coding.

3. Click on Nodes on the left navigation panel. Then right-click in the blank space under the Nodes section that was populated. Select New Node.

4. Type a name for the new node. You can add a description and a nickname. Once finished, click OK. You can create multiple nodes this way.

5. As you read, you can drag and drop contents into the nodes.

6. Or you could try some quick coding by writing the name of the theme you created in the Code At text box at the bottom of the screen and then click Code.

7. Note: to access the quick coding toolbar, go to the Document ribbon, in the View group, click Quick Coding drop-down menu and select where you would like the toolbar (Hide, Docked, or Floating).

8. The Code in Vivo button creates a new theme called whatever text is selected.

9. You can also see the coding via stripes on the right by clicking on them.

10. Or just by opening the node by double-clicking on it.

11. You can also drag and drop pictures into the nodes. Click and drag the mouse around the image you want to code. A black and white box will form around the picture. Then, drag the picture to the node you want to code it as.

12. To add pictures from PDFs into nodes, under the PDF ribbon, within in the PDF Selection group, select Region. Click and drag the mouse around the image you want to code. A black and white box will form around the picture. Then, drag the picture to the node you want to code it as.

13. You can also drag and drop text from PDFs into the nodes. Under the PDF ribbon, within in the PDF Selection group, select Text. Select the text you want to be added to a node and drag it to the corresponding node.
