Viewing and annotating articles within EndNote

In addition to formatted citations, you can store entire articles in EndNote. You can directly annotate articles within EndNote using their highlighter, text box, and underline tools.

1. To annotate a PDF within EndNote, first select the reference you want to annotate. You will know there’s an attached PDF when there is a paperclip icon in the reference.

2. Click the “open this reference” button (square with an arrow).

3. The annotation toolbar icon will be towards the top.

4. To highlight text, select the text you want to highlight, and click the button with the pencil and "ab".

5. To underline text, highlight the text you want to underline, and then click the button that is an underlined U.

6. To strikeout text, highlight the text you want to strikeout, click the button that is a T with a line through the middle of it (strikeout) and then you can change the color of the strikeout by using the color spectrum bar drop-down arrow.

7. To add a comment to text, highlight the text you want to add a comment to, and then click the button that is a chat box.

8. The comment box will appear on the right side of the document. To edit the text within the comment box, double click the comment box and then a text editor pop-up will appear where you can type your comment. Once you are done, click the X on the top right of the pop-up box to close the comment.

9. To save your changes, close the annotation pop-up box by clicking the red X in the top right corner and select Yes in the pop-up dialogue box. Your annotations will be stored in EndNote.
