View and annotate articles within EndNote (Mac)

In addition to formatted citations, you can store entire articles in EndNote. You can directly annotate articles within EndNote using their highlighter, text box, and underline tools.

1. Select the reference you want to annotate.

A paper clip icon next to the reference indicates that there is an attached PDF associated with the reference.

2. Click the Open this reference button.

3. Click the annotation toolbar icon.

4. To highlight text(s)

4.1. Select the text(s) you want to highlight.

4.2. Click the pencil button.

4.3. Click the color spectrum bar drop-down arrow to change the color of the highlighter.

5. To underline text, ,  that is an underlined U and then you can change the color of the underline by using the

5.1. Highlight the text you want to underline.

5.2. Click the underlined button.

5.3. Click the color spectrum bar drop-down arrow to change the color of the underline.

6. To strikeout text(s)

6.1. Highlight the text(s) you want to strikeout.

6.2. Click the strikeout button.

6.3. Click the color spectrum bar drop-down arrow to change the color of the strikeout.

7. To add a comment to text

7.1. Highlight the text(s) you want to add a comment to.

7.2. Click the chatbox button.

7.3. Click the color spectrum bar drop-down arrow to change the color of the comment.

7.4. The comment box will appear on the right side of the document.

7.5. Double click the comment box to edit or type your comment. Once you are done, click the X on the top left of the pop-up box to close the comment.

8. To create colored boxes that appears around text or images

8.1. Click the square button.

8.2. Draw the box around the texts of your choice.

8.3. Click the color spectrum bar drop-down arrow to change the color of the box.

9. When finished annotating, click the red X button on the top left corner to close the annotation pop-up box.

Your annotations will be stored in EndNote.

10. Click Save to save all changes.
